Behind the scenes

Southwestward

Very excited to announce that I am having my first solo photography show ever Thursday June 6! Presenting, “Southwestward”, a collection of landscapes from across the American South. At Twig of Laguna, in Laguna Beach CA. 6PM-9:30PM.

I never expected my first photo show be a landscape show, since I specialize in portraiture. However, this is a  project I’ve wanted to complete since it’s inception last August, when I went on my month long road trip across country. I’ve been carrying this project around in my brain for some time now & I need to give birth to it.

I did my trip on a super tight budget-my best friend Irene & I slept in my car, hostels, & camped our way from Southern California to New York & back. It was arguably the best month of my life, & I feel very lucky to have been able to have that experience. Traveling at all is a luxury that a lot of people don’t get to experience in their lifetime, so I wanted to make sure I gave back a bit as some kind of cosmic ‘thank you universe’. I will be selling prints at this show, & 100% of the proceeds will got to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, who are experiencing an overwhelming amount of Sea Lions in need of medical attention this year.

My dear friend Francisco Ruano will be playing live music & breaking your heart crooning the most beautiful Spanish love songs you’ve ever heard.

Photography. Live Music. Wildlife Preservation. Boom.

Hope to see you there!

boozeandbitching asked: Gennnnnnny have you started selling your art anywhere?

Not yet, but I will be selling photography for the first time at a show in Laguna Beach June 6! Everything that’s not sold I am intending to try to sell online. Details for that soon!

Test: Tristen

These are 2 quick shots I have from a really spur of the moment test shoot I did with my buddy Tristen. I didn’t think I had any usable images from this set but I just found it again & while I’m not totally stoked on these I don’t think they’re as bad as I thought they were. Shooting people & their motorcycles has been a project I’ve been wanting to delve into for some time now. I was suppose to start with my friend Karla, but she passed away a few days before we had planned to shoot. I think I’ll pick back up & move forward with this in June.

Poison Ivys

I had the pleasure of taking the team photos for my LA Derby Dolls Baby Doll Brawl team, the lovely Poison Ivys! My teammate Brooklyn Deck-her (Shannon Keller) did the graphics for the background & turned them into trading cards. This was a really quick & dirty shoot, & I think Shannon’s talents really helped make these great.

Here are a few of my favorites:

You can catch us on the track this Sunday at the Doll Factory in Los Angeles, where we’ll be bouting the Ms. Marvels!

on set: warner brother records

Last week I had the pleasure of assisting my dear friend Claire Vogel on a WB Records studio photo shoot. Claire is one of my very good friends from high school & has always been one of the most talented & driven people I know. I have such mad respect for her, & have so enjoyed watching her kick ass & master her craft to become a full blown director for Warner Bros (among many other things). When we were younger we were both making videos & taking pictures, & now we’re doing it on a professional level & to be able to collaborate & work together like this was really special to me.

Behind the scenes: back of the DLSR. Lighting test shot featuring me & Claire’s intern Jason as test models. I cracked up after I saw this because of our attitude…we’re really just looking at a light above us. Big thanks to Jason who helped me set up gear & dial in the lights all day.

Looking forward to seeing the final image. Will post when it is finished. In the mean time, here are some awesome links to Claire’s Vimeo, Flickr & Tumblr. She is a serious talent.

Here’s one of the most recent music videos she’s directed.

RK Studio: Nevada or bust

Hello Hello!

I know I have been very quiet on this blog lately, but luckily it’s because of mostly good things. I’ve been busy working with RK Studio, as well as with free lance work assisting & photographing here & there. Here are some of the awesome things that have happened in the last few months:

At the end of March, Riley & I went to Viva Las Vegas 16 & set up a booth for RK Studio at the car show. We sold prints, met some potential clients, & Sabina Kelley came to our booth to sign prints for a few hours. It was really an amazing weekend filled with meeting some incredible people, reuniting with old friends & burning the candle at both ends with work & play. We had an awesome time.

The following weekend we headed back to Nevada, where RK taught a Canon seminar on Pin-up portraiture.

I worked as a model & photographic assistant for this. Pulling double duty this way was maybe the most physically exhausting thing I’ve ever done. Waking up for hair and makeup at the crack of dawn followed by setting up lights & C-stands for two sets in the Nevada sun followed by 3 hours of posing in unnatural pin-up poses for 90 photographers was not easy. However it was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had with RK, & I could not have been more proud of everyone who made this even happen. All of the photographers were extraordinarily pleasant to work with. Funny, witty, gracious, grateful, talented-all of it. I could not have asked for a better student group to work with.

This was something I started a while ago, put down & just picked back up. I’m not convinced it’s done, but it’s done for now.

LA Derby Dolls vs Arizona Derby Dames

I just transferred over to the LA Derby Dolls & was very excited to be able to shoot this last game as my bout duty. I’ve never shot sports before, & let me tell you I have a whole new respect for sports photographers. This is not easy! Practice makes perfect, in the mean time here are some of my favorite images from the game:

Ty Segall Band II

I was just going through this set again & realized I hadn’t posted two of my favorites.

I went to high school with most of these guys & have been watching them play music since I was 15, when Mikal Cronin would put on shows at his guest house. ‘Cronin Shows’ were one of the highlights of my high school experience. I’ve always dug the music that crew cranked out, they’re a super rad & down to earth group of people, & I’m stoked to see them playing together still, years later, touring successfully & gaining some well-deserved recognition.

Bias or not, this was the most fun show I had been to all year. Ty told the security guards to basically fuck off after they were getting a too rough with the kids in the audience. He threatened to stop playing if the security didn’t stop bullying, which ended in the security guards doing nothing & swarms of people jumping onto the stage to dance & stage dive. It was probably the most punk rock thing I’d seen in a while. After I took some shots I ended up running to the back of the pit, shoving my way to the front, jumping over the rail onto the stage & dived. It was the first time I’ve ever crowd surfed & it was fun as hell.

I had some behind the scenes footage of her singing in the studio, but the speakers didn’t pick it up correctly unfortunately. So in leu of that video I’m posting another one I took of Mary singing on the beach, with DIY production value thanks to our friends, Dominic Gutierrez, Mia Parillo & Irene Richardson. Enjoy:

Some of my favorite live shots from the JD McPherson show at the Observatory in Santa Ana a few weeks ago. They were great. Jimmy Sutton’s cover of Bo Diddley’s ‘You don’t love me’ was killer. Go see them if you get a chance!
